Coach Bert van Marwijk was dismissed by the UAE on December 4, after a string of poor performances in the World Cup and 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
The UAE was eliminated from the group stage in the Gulf Cup on December 2, after losing to Qatar 2-4. They won only one match in the tournament, against Yemen. The remaining UAE defeat took place before Iraq with a score of 0-2.
The UAE also did not achieve high results in the second round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia. They are fourth in Group G, with six points, albeit one game less than the other teams. UAE is five points behind Vietnam’s peak.
Coach Van Marwijk took office in March 2019, with a three-year contract. Less than nine months, he had to leave. In 2017, the UAE also had to fire coach Edgardo Bauza when he was working for only four months.
The UAE has appointed many famous coaches outside Van Marwijk and Bauza, such as Rou Hodgson, Dick Advocaat or Alberto Zaccheroni. Van Marwijk was once expected with great achievements in the 2010 World Cup final with the Netherlands.
Indonesia coach’s unknown future after SEA Games
After losing Vietnam in the final of the SEA Games, coach Indra Sjafri has not been renewed by the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI).
Sjafri’s contract with PSSI is still valid until the end of December 2019. He was appointed coach U22 Indonesia a year ago with the most important task being SEA Games. Sjafri’s army defeated Thailand in the group stage, then reached the final and received silver HC when losing to Vietnam 0-3.
Sjafri did not hide his ambition to lead the Indonesian team, after PSSI fired coach Simon Mcmenemy in November 2019. Luis Milla and Shin Tae-yong are the two candidates reviewed by PSSI. They are more inclined to coach Shin, but the Korean captain at the 2018 World Cup wants to lead the Shenzhen club, China.
Coach Sjafri has led many Indonesian team levels such as U16, U19 and U22. At club level, he has only guided Bali United for two seasons. Sjafri has a License Pro certificate issued by Asian Football Federation (AFC).
